Frzy performs with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra this week.
In Friday’s (11/3) Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Jeremy Reynolds writes, “On Wednesday in Heinz Hall … two worlds will collide for a night, when rapper Frzy partners with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for a 90-minute concert featuring music from his latest album, ‘Success,’ released Nov. 1 with an announcement from Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin…. This isn’t your grandfather’s orchestra concert, but it’s not a hip-hop show either—it’s something in between, with both parties adjusting their usual style. ‘I’m busting into this world with one of the big dogs!’ said Frzy, a fashionista and Jay Z superfan … The concert will be his first full show with a classical orchestra. ‘This is a partnership….’ Orchestras partnering with rappers isn’t new. There have been concerts like this before—the Pittsburgh Symphony has performed with hip-hop artists Nelly and Common—often pairing a mix of hip-hop and classical in a ‘mash-up’ style concert. Rappers have also appeared in ‘classical’ concert halls around the world and often incorporate instrumental music into their live shows…. Christian Kriegeskotte … scored the orchestral arrangements of Frzy’s music, working with the rapper to use the orchestra in a way that both preserves the songs’ original feel but also takes full advantage of the symphony’s might and variety.”
